SELF-EXPERIMENTS

Sauna 3× a week

Three relaxed sessions a week, then check what moved in your sleep and HRV.

What it is

Regular sessions in a traditional (Finnish-style) or infrared sauna, usually 10–20 minutes at a time, a few times a week. Most people follow it with a cool shower and plenty of water.

What the research says

Much of the research on regular sauna use comes from long-running observational studies. They show associations, not cause and effect.

That gap on sleep is exactly why it’s worth testing on yourself.

How to try it

  1. Pick three fixed days. Same time of day if you can, so the change is easy to compare.
  2. Start short. 10 minutes is enough for the first week. Leave if you feel dizzy or unwell.
  3. Cool down and drink water before you get dressed.
  4. Keep everything else the same for the test period: bedtime, caffeine, training.

Skip sauna if you have a heart condition, low blood pressure or are pregnant, unless a clinician has said it’s fine. Avoid alcohol before and during sessions.
